TRENTON, NEW JERSEY
CLIMATE DATA OBSERVED AT COOP 999999/14792 ("MERCER COUNTY AIRPORT"/"TRENTON MERCER AIRPORT")

With the closing of "Trenton WBO City"/"Trenton WSO City" on December 1, 1981, weather observing moved from the
city of Trenton to its suburb Ewing, the location of what is currently known as "Trenton Mercer Airport". Hourly
airway observations had begun at what was then known as "Skillman Airport" in 1930, though for climate purposes
these consisted only of hourly temperature data with no observations in the middle of the night and no rainfall or
snowfall reports. This remained true even after World War II, when the facility was renamed "Mercer County
Airport." Air traffic at the facility simply was not heavy enough to warrant a Weather Bureau office, so while
offices across the country were relocating from downtown buildings to airport terminals and control towers in the
1940s, 1950s and 1960s, in Trenton the office remained downtown until it closed on November 30, 1981. Thus, from
December 1, 1981 through March 10, 1998, the only data directly from the airport that could be used for
climatological purposes were the hourly temperature reports, which were analyzed for 24-hour maximum and minimum
values.

Because no precipitation gage was located at the airport itself, fifteen-minute precipitation data from a
Fischer-Porter Automatic Precipitation Gage at "Trenton State College" was used to fill in the gap. This weighing
precipitation gage, located 2.1 miles east-southeast of the airport air traffic control tower in Ewing, determined
the amount of precipitation by the weight of the contents of the guage. The gage was originally installed in 1976.
Its measurements were also analyzed for 24-hour values between December 1, 1981 and March 10, 1998.

Because snowfall measurements were not made at either the airport or the college, measurements made by the
webmaster and his family were incorporated. Their residence is also located in Ewing, 1.8 miles southeast of the
airport control tower, and 0.8 mile southwest of the "Trenton State College" precipitation gage.

A private observing site known as "Washingtons Crossing", located 2.5 miles north of the airport control tower in
Hopewell Township, provided back-up observations between December 1, 1981 and March 10, 1998 if data from any of the
three primary sites in Ewing was missing.

On March 11, 1998, an Automated Surface Observing System (ASOS) was installed at the airport. This system became
the primary precipitation and temperature observation system, and remains so at present. The precipitation gage at
the newly renamed "College of New Jersey" continued to function through 2001, providing additional data during
snowfall events when the ASOS tipping-bucket guage had difficulty measuring the water-content of snow. Snowfall
itself continues to be measured by the webmaster and his family, who continue to reside 1.9 miles southeast of the
airport ASOS.

It must be noted that none of the data listed from this combined observing site is considered official by the
National Climatic Data Center. However, it is hoped that one day, it will be properly filed with the NCDC.

Trenton Mercer Airport (formerly Mercer County Airport) became the primary Trenton observing site for temperatures
on December 1, 1981. It became the primary observing site for precipitation on March 11, 1998.

Before the installation of the Automated Surface Observing System (ASOS), observations were taken at the control
tower (left); since March 11, 1998, the ASOS (right) has been the primary producer of observations.

Cromwell Hall at the College of New Jersey (formerly Trenton State College). A Fischer-Porter precipitation gage
located here was the primary precipitation observing system for Trenton from December 1, 1981 through March 10,
1998. It provided back-up precipitation data until the end of 2001.

The Washington's Crossing Bridge in Washington's Crossing, New Jersey (during the Delaware River Flood of June
2006). The exact location of the private weather station at Washington's Crossing is not shown here at the
observer's request. This site provided back-up observations for all three sites listed above as needed.
